The Wilds of North Carolina

Full-time staff housing

People are our most valuable resource. Without our amazing staff, we can’t hope to carry out our God-given mission. Adequate housing provides our families with stability and helps us retain staff with young families. Would you help us build these duplexes to care for these faithful staff members?

Project Overview

Caring for our full-time staff

Have you heard the saying, “Home is where the heart is”? For most of our staff at The Wilds, that saying is doubly true—because they actually live where they serve. People are our most valuable resource. While nearly 300 summer staff join us at The Wilds of North Carolina each year, our full-time staff keep camp running smoothly all year round, creating a positive camper experience for teens and adults alike.

God has blessed us with a highly diverse team of Christlike, servant-minded staff, but to safeguard our mission through the coming decades, we must maintain a steady influx of younger full-time staff. We have more than 130 people living on our North Carolina campsite. This includes full-time staff families as well as our seasonal staff. We can’t overestimate the importance of finding—and keeping—the right people, as they will eventually be the future leaders and drivers of The Wilds ministry. But keeping them requires adequate housing on our campsite.

Project Details

Phase 1

We believe that creating a new housing area with duplexes will provide stability for our younger staff in the area that most impacts them: where they live and raise their families. Eventually, we hope to phase out some of our aging A-frame cabins and modular trailers that were supposed to be temporary about 30 years ago, but that will have to wait for Phase 2 of this staff housing project.

The first phase will focus on grading, installing a utility network for this new housing area, and constructing two duplexes. This new housing area will have room for more duplexes as well, which we believe will be suitable for “empty nest” staff who may not need as much room as they did when they were raising children. Full-time staff nearing retirement add significant value to the ministry—plus, they are like family, and we love to keep them around. Additional staff housing gives flexibility to allow our older staff to continue working without the pressure of needing their housing for others.

Factoring in the cost of the groundwork, inflated construction prices, and hiring out some of the labor, we estimate that $750,000 per duplex will be needed for this project. Will you help us provide adequate housing for four full-time staff families? More than any other project, full-time staff housing will position The Wilds to thrive for the Next 50 years.
